TERN one of nine of the sea bird class boats built by John Hildtich in 1897 at Carrickfergus for a cost of £240.00. Only 3 thought to remain to this day and 2 (Tern and Whimbrel) have passed through the same yard where TERN was totally re-built, “The Ocean Yacht Company”, Penpol boatyard. No expense spared. Tern brought to the yard in 1994, originally to have her counter repaired – returned in 1996 for total restoration back to original design work and was completed to be ICYA competitive for 2000. Tern consumed 4 trees of Larch, together with hand chosen Afromosia White Oak and Teak. Tern raced in Belfast Lough until about 1912 when it is believed she converted to yawl for cruising. TERN Arrived in Cornish waters about 1947 and was used for day trips. One former owner who bought her in 1964 raced and cruised her continually winning many regattas. Built for racing, and still racing today. The present owner, who bought her in 2000, has sailed her extensively around Falmouth and Fowey, joining in many regattas as well as the Fife regatta on the Clyde 2003 before sailing back to Falmouth. Since 2006, she has been based in Mallorca, racing in the Trofeo Almirante conde de Barcelona.
